Publishing Scholarly Books with Scientific Purpose and Editorial Rigour

AvenSci Publishing welcomes scholarly book proposals that make a clearly defined contribution to scientific understanding, research methodology or the critical synthesis of established and emerging knowledge. Our publishing programme focuses particularly on the life and biomedical sciences and their interdisciplinary connections.

We work with researchers, academic authors and prospective Book Editors to develop publications for specialist researchers, postgraduate students, educators and professionals. We consider proposals on the basis of scholarly relevance, intellectual coherence, engagement with scientific literature and suitability for the intended readership.

Why Publish with AvenSci?

  • Personalised editorial support: Clear guidance for authors and Book Editors from the initial proposal through manuscript preparation and production.
  • Scientific rigour: Scholarly assessment and peer review appropriate to the publication, with editorial decisions based on academic merit.
  • Transparent publishing terms: Publication formats, access conditions, responsibilities, applicable charges and contractual terms are discussed before a binding commitment.
  • Fair remuneration: Under AvenSci's standard commercial publishing model, eligible book sales generate author or Book Editor royalties of 15% of net receipts, subject to the applicable agreement.

Publication Formats

Authored books and research monographs. Substantial works presenting an integrated examination of a scientific subject, a critical synthesis of research findings, or an original methodological or conceptual contribution.

Edited books and multi-author volumes. Thematically organised collections developed under the scientific coordination of one or more Book Editors, with a coherent intellectual framework and clear chapter contributions.

Scholarly book chapters. Research-based contributions intended for inclusion in an edited volume or, where an appropriate publication framework exists, for individual consideration.

Thesis-derived monographs. Doctoral research substantially adapted for a scholarly readership, including suitable revision of structure, argumentation, literature coverage and presentation.

Conference proceedings and abstract collections. Publications documenting contributions to academic meetings, subject to clearly defined editorial responsibilities, selection procedures and publication requirements.

Book series and thematic volumes. Coherent publication programmes addressing identifiable areas of scholarship with a defined academic scope and appropriate editorial oversight.

From Proposal to Publication

Our publishing process is designed to be clear and transparent. The precise assessment and production requirements may vary by publication type. A positive preliminary assessment does not guarantee final manuscript acceptance.

AvenSci Publishing editorial process

1. Submit Your Proposal

Authors or Book Editors submit a project proposal describing the scientific rationale, scope, intended readers, proposed structure, contributors where relevant, and anticipated manuscript schedule. A completed manuscript is not required at this initial stage.

2. Initial Editorial Assessment

AvenSci considers the proposal's scientific relevance, originality, coherence, feasibility and fit with its publishing programme. We may request clarification, changes to the proposed scope or an initial expert opinion. Some proposals will not be taken forward.

3. Publishing Offer and Agreement

If the project is suitable for further development, we discuss the intended publishing model, responsibilities, delivery expectations, royalties, any applicable publication charges and contractual terms. Any binding publishing agreement is concluded under the conditions specified for the project; agreeing to develop a proposal does not guarantee acceptance of the final manuscript.

4. Manuscript Preparation

Authors prepare and submit the complete manuscript in accordance with AvenSci's guidelines, including figures, tables, references, permissions and supplementary material. For edited volumes, Book Editors coordinate chapter contributions and maintain the coherence of the work.

5. Peer Review and Revisions

Manuscripts, selected chapters or individual contributions undergo scholarly assessment appropriate to the publication. Independent subject specialists may evaluate scientific relevance, methodological soundness, interpretation, references and contribution. Authors respond to reviewer comments and revise their work as required. Further rounds of review may be necessary.

6. Final Editorial Decision

AvenSci considers the completed assessments and revised materials before deciding whether the manuscript meets its publication requirements. Acceptance is not automatic, and publication charges do not influence the scientific decision.

7. Production and Proof Approval

Accepted work enters editorial production, including relevant copyediting, consistency checks, typesetting, bibliographic metadata preparation and preparation of the agreed print or digital formats. Authors or Book Editors review proofs and communicate corrections before release. Substantive changes may require renewed editorial consideration.

8. Publication and Distribution

After final quality checks, the work is published and distributed through the agreed commercial or Open Access channels. Available formats may include print, PDF, EPUB 3 or HTML, as appropriate. Publication metadata and identifiers are provided through the applicable registration processes.

Important: Submitting a proposal does not guarantee publication. Timelines depend on the project's complexity, reviewer availability, revision requirements and production needs.

Scientific Criteria for Proposal Assessment

Depending on the publication format, a proposal should demonstrate:

  • A clearly articulated scholarly objective and contribution to the field.
  • Appropriate engagement with current and foundational scientific literature.
  • A sound conceptual or methodological basis.
  • A coherent structure suited to the subject and intended readership.
  • Relevant expertise and clearly defined responsibilities among authors or Book Editors.
  • A realistic development schedule and a plan for completing the work.

For edited books, particular attention is paid to chapter relationships, balance of perspectives, contributor expertise and the editorial team's ability to maintain consistency. A proposal may be declined if its scope, contribution or structure does not meet AvenSci's requirements.

Commercial and Open Access Publishing

Traditional commercial publishing: Under AvenSci's standard model, authors are not charged mandatory publication fees. AvenSci finances publication and earns revenue from eligible print and digital book sales. Authors or Book Editors receive 15% royalties on net receipts from eligible sales, under the terms of the publishing agreement.

Funded Open Access: Readers can access the digital publication free of charge when the costs of production are covered by institutional funding, research grants or transparent Book Processing Charges (BPCs). Any applicable charges are agreed in advance. Royalties on separately sold commercial editions, if applicable, are specified in the agreement.

Diamond Open Access: Neither authors nor readers pay publication fees when adequate institutional, academic-society or external funding covers the publication costs. Availability depends on securing such support; this is not an unconditional publication option.

The same scientific assessment and editorial standards apply regardless of the funding model. Access licences, rights, permitted reuse, royalties and all financial responsibilities are defined in the relevant agreement.

Preparing a Proposal

To enable an informed preliminary assessment, please prepare:

  • A provisional title and a concise statement of the scientific purpose.
  • An explanation of the contribution to existing research literature.
  • A description of the intended academic or professional readership.
  • A preliminary table of contents and brief chapter descriptions.
  • Information about the author, Book Editor or proposed editorial team.
  • Details of prospective contributors, where relevant.
  • An estimated manuscript length and anticipated delivery schedule.
  • Any funding, Open Access or institutional requirements.

Researchers and academic editors with a suitably developed project are invited to submit a proposal through AvenSci's designated submission process. The proposal will be considered according to the relevant scientific and editorial requirements.
